When Megan and I finally caught up with Nell, she wasn’t exactly crying, but you could tell by the tear tracks running through the dirt on her cheeks that she’d only just stopped.

Megan and I fell into step on either side of her, but it was a while before she asked, “So what happened?”

“Jake decked him,” Megan answered, her voice a mix of pride and disbelief.

I sort of felt the same way. I’d actually flattened the big, bad bully. As a reminder of my heroic feat, my hand was killing me.

“Good,” said Nell. “Then what happened?”

I shrugged. “Nothing. I made sure he wasn’t dead, then we left him there.”

“Fine,” Nell said.

“I got this.” Megan held the gun up so she could see.

“Good,” said Nell.

For the most part, we didn’t talk anymore. Our headlong plunge through the woods caused us to stray so far from the trail, picking our way back to the campsite was slow going. We lost our bearings over and over, circling around for a long time. More than two hours had passed before we finally stumbled onto the shore of the lake.

With relief, I collected my backpack. Thank God all hell didn’t break loose until after I’d stowed my camera safely away. The girls set to work picking up the rest of the stuff scattered around the site until Megan turned to me and Nell and said, “Ready?”

Nell got a funny look on her face. “Just one minute.”

“What?” I asked.

“Give me that thing,” Nell said to Megan.

Megan knew what she meant right away and handed her the gun. For a moment Nell held the Magnum, weighing it in her hand, staring at it like she couldn’t quite believe it was real. Then she took three long strides to the water’s edge and, swinging her arm wide, heaved the gun. It flew over the lake in a soaring arc, splashing down a good distance away from shore, where the water was likely to be so deep and murky it could never be found. I’d never even touched the thing and was glad it was gone, but I hated the thought of the oily metal forever polluting the water as it rusted away.
